Senatorial Committee members and TETFund on Tuesday declare their for the Federal Government’s push to establish the minimal entrance age into tertiary institutions at 18 years.
The Head of the Senate Committee on Advanced Schools and TETFund, Muntari Dandutse Senator, delivered his address while leading others from the group and their House of Representatives connecting group to oversee the ongoing UTME at particular test sites as part of legislators’ monitoring role.
Dandutse implied the Senate’s endorsement of any government initiative to streamline admission processes, mainly focusing on the least age prerequisite for tertiary institution entrance in the land.
In an earlier address to UTME candidates set to begin examinations at Government Secondary School Tudu Wada, Abuja, a Senator representing Katsina South Senatorial District in Katsina State cautioned against partaking in exam misconduct that may harm their prospective lives.
He notified them of their fortune with the establishment of a Scholar Loan Program by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, facilitating their admission into chosen institutions.
Interviewing with correspondents post-activity, a Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District and committee member, Sunday Karimi Senator, revealed the Senate’s alignment with the Education Minister’s proposal.
According to him, limiting admission to students above 12 years before secondary goals to guarantee they possess the cognitive and emotional readiness needed for navigating secondary education challenges effectively.
“When a student who entered secondary school at 12 finishes the program at 18, defined age, the law upholds this. If any amendment is necessary to bolster it, we are prepared.”
He lauded JAMB for the seamless management of the 2024 UTME and the convenient environment provided for candidates.
Recalling the Education Minister, Professor Tahir Mamman announced on Monday that a review on the admission age to tertiary institutions is under consideration.
The Minister advised parents against urging their children too much to enable maturity necessary to handle their matters effectively.
He emphasized the need to prevent students too young to comprehend university education migrating from a controlled setting to independent management, leading to problems in universities.
“We need to address this. 18 is the university entrance threshold, yet witnessing 15, and 16 years old taking exams isn’t ideal. Parents must stop pushing their children too much.”
